Understanding Implant Problems

Not Every Dental Implant Case Is Straightforward.

Existing implants, surrounding gum tissues, bone support, and previous dental restorations can create complicated situations. Understanding the underlying problem is essential before deciding what treatment may be appropriate.

Failing or Troubling Implants

Movement, discomfort, swelling, or changes around an implant may indicate a concern requiring professional evaluation.

Problems Around Existing Implants

Inflammation and changes in tissues surrounding implants may require specialized assessment. Dr. Moussa is a LAPIP-certified clinician.

Complex Implant Planning

Previous dental work, missing teeth, bone limitations, and full-mouth restoration needs may influence treatment options.

Individualized Assessment

A Thoughtful Treatment Plan Begins With the Right Questions.

Dental implant complications can have different causes. A careful examination helps determine what is happening and which approaches may be reasonable.

  • Review of your dental and implant treatment history.
  • Assessment of existing implants and restorations.
  • Evaluation of surrounding tissues and bone as appropriate.
  • Discussion of treatment, repair, or replacement options.
  • Clear explanations of limitations and next steps.

Some situations may require additional treatment, restoration repair, implant replacement, or referral.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About Complex Dental Implant Cases

What are signs that a dental implant may be failing?

Movement, discomfort, swelling, bleeding around an implant, or changes in nearby gum tissue may signal a problem. These symptoms do not necessarily establish implant failure; an examination is needed.

Can a failing dental implant be saved?

It depends on the cause, surrounding tissue and bone condition, and other clinical factors. Treatment may involve managing the problem, repair, removal, or replacement.

Can I get a second opinion about dental implants?

Yes. Another evaluation may help clarify your options. Bring previous imaging and treatment records if available.

What if I've been told I don't have enough bone for implants?

Bone support affects implant planning. Additional procedures or alternative restorative approaches may be considered after an examination and appropriate imaging.
